The SEO retainer, versus buying exactly what you need

A typical SEO retainer costs $3,000 to $7,500 per month and bundles strategy, execution and reporting into one recurring fee. The alternative is buying SEO as fixed-price tasks and paying only for work that gets produced. For most companies under roughly $5M in revenue, the task model delivers the same core work for 60 to 80 percent less.

A disclosure before the math: our parent agency, Kadima Digital, sells retainers. We are not neutral observers writing a takedown. We built Kadima for the teams a retainer does not fit, and knowing both sides is exactly why you should read this version instead of the usual one.

What a retainer actually buys

A good retainer buys continuity. Someone owns your account, watches your rankings weekly, reacts when an algorithm update lands on a Tuesday, and carries context from quarter to quarter. At enterprise scale, with daily stakeholders and multiple markets, that continuity is worth real money.

What a retainer hides

The hours. Most retainers price a block of monthly capacity, and you rarely see how much of it turned into deliverables versus meetings about deliverables. Light months cost the same as heavy months. Month 9 costs the same as month 1, even though the heavy lifting usually happened in the first quarter.

When the retainer wins

If that is you, hire a retainer agency. We know a good one.

When tasks win

You know roughly what needs doing, or you want a plan that tells you. You want senior work without funding an account team. You want to stop paying for continuity you are not using. That is most companies, most of the time.

How to decide in five minutes

Count your unknowns. If you do not yet know what is broken, what to target or who should do what, a defined sequence of tasks answers those questions for a few hundred dollars and leaves you owning the roadmap. If you already run continuous SEO across content, links and technical, and someone senior steers it monthly, a retainer with the right agency is a fair structure. The failure mode is paying retainer prices to discover things a one-time audit would have told you in week one.

Mixing the two, sensibly

The models are not enemies. A common pattern we see: buy the Growth Plan and Technical SEO Audit as tasks, implement for a quarter, then decide whether the ongoing work justifies a retainer, ours or anyone's, from a position of evidence. Kadima Digital, our parent agency, runs exactly those engagements, so we have no religion here, only a strong view about which order to spend in.

Questions we get about this

When does a retainer clearly win?

Continuous programs with real monthly cadence: content shipping weekly, links building steadily, a technical backlog being worked down, and a senior human steering. If all four are true, a retainer is honest economics.

Can task-based SEO handle a large site?

Yes, because tasks scope by problem, not by size. A 70,000-URL catalog fits inside a Technical SEO Audit; what changes is the depth of the fix list, not the price structure.

What if we already have an agency?

Keep them, and use single tasks as a second opinion or an overflow lane. An independent audit either validates your agency, which is worth knowing, or finds what the monthly report was not mentioning, which is worth more.

Start with the plan, not a contract

The Growth Plan maps your next 6 months and names what to run first. If it says you need less than you thought, that is the plan working.
