Reddit and AI search: the citation that collapsed in a day

By one count, Reddit was the single most-cited domain on Perplexity and the second most-cited on ChatGPT Search in late 2025, and it earned those citations from posts with a handful of upvotes, not viral ones. Then, on 14 August 2026, Reddit's share of ChatGPT's citations fell from 3.83% to 0.52%, an 86.4% drop inside a single day, while Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode barely budged over the same weeks. Neither OpenAI nor Google said anything about it. The lesson is not which number to trust today. It is that citation share can move by double digits with zero warning, which is exactly the case for watching it continuously instead of checking once.

Why Reddit became one of AI search's most-cited domains

Semrush's Cecilia Meis and Aleksandr Drozdov published an analysis on 10 November 2025 built from 248,000 unique Reddit URLs cited across 217,000 unique prompts on Google AI Mode, Perplexity and ChatGPT Search. By their count Reddit was the single most-cited domain on Perplexity and the second most-cited on ChatGPT Search. Measured a different way, a Reddit link showed up in roughly 12.6% of ChatGPT Search's answers, at an average citation position of 7, in 3.5% of Perplexity's answers at position 3, and in about 9% of Google AI Mode's answers at position 8 to 9.

The part worth sitting with is what the cited posts actually looked like. Median upvotes on a cited post ran 5 to 8, median comments 11 to 19, and 80% of cited posts had fewer than 20 upvotes. The average cited post was roughly 900 days old and around 80 words long, nothing close to a viral thread. Semrush's own semantic-similarity scoring put cited posts at 0.53 to 0.54 similarity to the AI's actual response, against only 0.04 to 0.05 similarity to the original prompt. In plain terms, the models were matching posts to the answer they were about to give, not rewarding engagement, recency or length. A brand does not need a viral Reddit moment to get cited. It needs a plainly worded answer sitting in a relevant thread, the same low bar our guide to backlinks and AI search found when it looked at authority signals more broadly: citation and popularity are turning out to be two different things.

Google and ChatGPT don't use Reddit for the same job

BrightEdge's AI Hypercube analysis, published 20 March 2026 from more than 465,000 Google AI Overviews prompts and 719,000 ChatGPT prompts, found ChatGPT surfaced a Reddit citation in roughly 55% more of its answers than Google AI Overviews did. The two engines also keep different company when they cite it. Google's AI Overviews most often co-cited Reddit alongside YouTube (29% of the time), Quora (9.4%) and Facebook (8.8%), treating it as one node in a wider user-generated-content web. ChatGPT paired Reddit with Healthline (8.7%), Wikipedia (5.0%) and Cleveland Clinic (3.9%) far more often, using it closer to what BrightEdge calls a credibility layer stacked next to expert sources rather than just another social citation.

That difference showed up hardest by category. ChatGPT cited Reddit for how-to questions about four times as often as Google AI Overviews did, 32% of answers against 8%, and roughly twice as often for health and finance queries. A brand optimizing its Reddit presence for one engine's citation pattern is not necessarily optimizing for the other's, which matters for anyone treating AI visibility as one number instead of a per-engine picture.

Then, on 14 August 2026, ChatGPT's Reddit citations fell 86% overnight

Promptwatch, a GEO analytics firm that tracks citations across roughly 26 billion analyzed prompts and responses, recorded Reddit holding a 3.83% average share of ChatGPT Search citations through the window of 18 July to 7 August 2026. On 14 August that share fell to 0.52% for the 14 to 17 August window, an 86.4% relative drop, and the fall happened inside a single day rather than drifting down over weeks. Google's two AI surfaces moved far less over the same measurement period, 7 July through 17 August: AI Overviews slipped from 2.37% to 2.10%, an 11.3% decline, and AI Mode fell from 2.22% to 1.54%, a 30.5% decline, both gradual rather than a cliff.

Nobody outside the companies running these models has confirmed why. Promptwatch's own founder, Klaas Foppen, flagged the size of the ChatGPT number as provisional rather than settled, writing that a shift in ChatGPT's source selection around 8 August is the obvious candidate but that a data-collection issue on Promptwatch's own side cannot be ruled out, and recommending a check of collection volume around 14 August before treating the drop as a confirmed algorithm change. Neither OpenAI nor Google has made a public statement about a change to how either engine selects or weights Reddit as a source.

What this means if an AEO plan leans on Reddit

None of this argues Reddit stopped mattering. Even after the ChatGPT drop, Google's two AI surfaces kept citing it at close to their prior rate, and Semrush's underlying study never suggested a post needed to be popular or recent to get cited, which is good news for a brand willing to answer a real question in a relevant subreddit rather than chase upvotes. What it argues against is treating any single platform's citation behaviour as a fixed input to a content plan. A channel supplying an eighth of one engine's citations in one reading supplied roughly a sixtieth of that only weeks later, with no public announcement from the company running the model.

A team that checked once in early August and built a Reddit-heavy plan around that reading would have shipped it into a market that had already changed by the time anyone reviewed the plan again. It is the same failure mode our guide to rank tracking describes for a single blended position: a reading taken once is a photo of a moment, not a measurement of a trend. That volatility, not any single number in this piece, is the actual finding. Citation share moved by double digits inside days, on one engine and not the other, for reasons neither company disclosed, and the only people who caught it were a third party running continuous measurement instead of a single check. AI Citation Monitoring exists for exactly this: not to know what the number is today, but to know the day it changes.

What we could not verify

No AI company has published an official statement describing how much weight it gives Reddit content in source selection, on any of the three engines covered here, so every figure above is an external observation of behaviour, not disclosed methodology. Semrush and BrightEdge are each a single vendor's proprietary panel, neither has been independently replicated, and both are built by companies that also sell tools for measuring this exact kind of visibility. Promptwatch's own most dramatic number, the 86.4% single-day drop in ChatGPT's Reddit citations, carries its founder's explicit caveat that a data-collection issue on Promptwatch's side cannot be ruled out. We are repeating that caveat rather than smoothing over it, and treating the size, though probably not the direction, of that drop as provisional until an independent panel confirms it.

A check worth running this week

  1. Find out how much of your current AI citation data traces to Reddit specifically. If you are relying on a vendor tool, a monitoring subscription, or your own manual prompt runs, check whether it breaks citations down by source domain. If the honest answer is "we don't know," that gap is itself the finding.
  2. Note the date of your last check. A swing of this size happened in a single day on one engine. A reading from more than a few weeks ago should be treated as historical, not current.
  3. Compare across at least two engines, not one. The August 2026 drop happened almost entirely on ChatGPT while Google's two AI surfaces moved far less over the same weeks, so a single-engine reading would tell two different stories depending on which engine you happened to check.

Common questions

Does Reddit still dominate AI search citations?

It depends which engine. Semrush's November 2025 study found Reddit was the single most-cited domain on Perplexity and the second most-cited on ChatGPT Search, but Promptwatch's tracking found Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell 86% in a single day in August 2026, while Google's two AI surfaces barely moved over the same weeks.

Why do Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT use Reddit differently?

BrightEdge's March 2026 analysis found Google treats Reddit as one node among several user-generated sources, usually co-cited with YouTube, Quora and Facebook. ChatGPT pairs Reddit more often with expert sources like Healthline and Wikipedia, using it more like a credibility layer.

Why did Reddit's ChatGPT citations drop so fast in August 2026?

Nobody outside OpenAI has confirmed the cause. Promptwatch points to a likely change in ChatGPT's source selection around 8 August 2026, but its own founder says a data-collection issue on Promptwatch's side cannot be ruled out and calls the size of the drop provisional.
