GEO, AEO, SEO: the acronyms, sorted

SEO gets you found in a list of search results. AEO, also called GEO, gets you cited inside an AI-generated answer. They are not competing philosophies; they are the same discipline aimed at two surfaces, and the AI surface is built largely from the search one. The acronym you argue about matters far less than whether the work is being done.

GEO and AEO are two names for one thing. The industry has not settled on a single term, so you will see both; treat them as synonyms. What matters is the shared goal: appearing inside the synthesized answer, not just the blue links beneath it.

How much of it is a rebrand

Some of it, honestly. The foundations of AEO are the foundations of good SEO: crawlable pages, clear structure, trusted content, technical health. Anyone selling AEO as a total reinvention is overselling. But the extension is real. AEO adds distinct work that classic SEO never needed: making your entity unambiguous, structuring answers to be quotable whole, confirming AI crawlers can reach you, and monitoring citations across engines that change their minds weekly.

What actually changes about the work

You still fix the technical base and earn trust; that never stops mattering. On top, you write the answer to a question in the first sentence instead of the sixth, you state your identity in schema and in plain prose, you check GPTBot and its peers are allowed in, and you measure whether the engines name you. It is SEO with a second scoreboard, and the second scoreboard is the one growing.

Where to start

Measure both surfaces before you spend. A Technical SEO Audit scores the foundation; an AEO Visibility Audit scores the answer surface. The Growth Plan sequences the two into one six-month roadmap. Read next: what is AEO and the AI crawlers.

Where the two surfaces genuinely diverge

The overlap is large, but the differences are real and worth naming. Classic search rewards depth, freshness and authority across a whole page, and measures success in rankings and clicks. The answer surface rewards a single extractable passage, a clear entity, and being present in the sources an engine already trusts, and measures success in whether you are named at all. A page can rank on page one and still never be cited, because its best answer is buried or its identity is unclear. That gap, ranking without being recommended, is the space AEO works in, and it is invisible to every tool that only watches rankings.

A practical split: what to do for each

For the search surface, keep doing the durable work: fix the technical base, build genuinely useful pages, earn links, cover topics with depth. For the answer surface, add four moves on top: put the direct answer in the opening sentence so it can be lifted whole, state your identity in schema and plain prose so the engine is sure who you are, confirm the AI crawlers can reach you, and monitor whether the engines actually name you. None of the second list replaces the first; it extends it. The most efficient programs treat them as one sequence rather than two budgets.

How to budget across SEO and AEO

Start by measuring both, because guessing wastes money in whichever direction your instinct leans. If your category rarely triggers AI answers, most of your budget stays in classic SEO and AEO is a light, cheap layer. If buyers in your category already ask engines for recommendations, part of the budget belongs on the answer surface now, before the defaults harden. The honest move is to score each surface first, then spend against the evidence rather than the acronym of the month. A single roadmap that sequences both beats running two disconnected efforts that optimise the site in opposite directions.

The tools that measure each surface

They are different instruments. For the search surface, Google Search Console shows impressions, clicks and average position from real Google data, and a rank tracker follows specific keywords over time. For the answer surface, no single dashboard exists yet, so measurement is systematic prompting: run the same buyer questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude on a schedule, and record whether you are cited, mentioned, misrepresented or absent, against your competitors. The first set of tools is mature and passive; the second is manual and deliberate, which is exactly why most brands do not measure the answer surface at all, and why the ones that do get an early, unfair read on where they stand.

A six-month view

Treated as one program, the sequence is straightforward. Early months fix the search foundation, because the answer engines lean on content that already ranks, so there is little point optimising for citation on top of a broken base. Middle months add the answer-surface work: quotable structure, entity clarity, crawler access. Later months are about defence and measurement, watching the citations arrive and holding position as engines refresh. Run as two disconnected efforts, the same work fights itself; run as one roadmap, each surface reinforces the other. That single-sequence view is the whole argument for planning both together rather than buying them as separate services.

The honest bottom line on the acronyms

Ignore the argument about which three letters to use and watch what the work actually is. Doing SEO well in 2026 already means writing answer-first, structuring pages so a passage can be lifted, keeping your identity consistent, and letting the AI crawlers in. Whether you call that SEO, AEO or GEO changes nothing about the tasks. The brands winning the answer surface are not the ones with the cleverest acronym; they are the ones who measured both surfaces, sequenced the work, and started before the defaults hardened. Pick the term your team likes, then get on with the parts that move the needle.

Sources

If you want the research rather than the marketing, the term GEO comes from the original GEO paper on arXiv, with a later critical survey of the field. Google's own position is set out in AI features and your website.

Common questions

Is GEO different from AEO?

Barely. Both describe being visible and cited inside AI answers. The acronym matters less than doing the work.

Do I need to choose between SEO and AEO?

No. AI engines build answers largely from content that already ranks, so SEO is the foundation and AEO is the layer on top.

Is AEO just a rebrand of SEO?

Partly. Foundations overlap, but AEO adds distinct work: entity clarity, quotable structure, crawler access and citation monitoring. An extension, not a replacement.
